New Director of UK Algal Bioenergy group

Dr Michele Stanley, lead scientist of the BioMara project, has been appointed Director of the Algal Bioenergy Special Interest Group (AB-SIG) network

Dr Michele Stanley, lead scientist of the BioMara project and senior lecturer at SAMS, has been appointed Director of the Algal Bioenergy Special Interest Group (AB-SIG) network, hosted by the Technology Strategy Board Biosciences KTN and funded by the Technology Strategy Board and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The network will consider the commercial opportunities of using micro- and macro-algae for renewable energy and chemicals production whilst also examining the environmental considerations associated with the large-scale deployment of such activities.

The key anticipated outcome of the AB-SIG is the generation of opportunities for the research community to focus on developing the evidence base to inform decisions on, for example, the best algal feed stocks for the UK, the most appropriate locations and environmental implications of macroalgal production, and predictive modelling of the implications for the environment of scaling up microalgae production. Critically, the network enables early evaluation of the environmental and economic impact of algal bioenergy through development of a 'sustainability framework' using analogues developed for terrestrial bioenergy deployments. The network will also ensure close engagement with technological developments in this area.

Prof Laurence Mee, Director of SAMS said: “this is a prestigious role at the cutting edge of science and technology in the UK. I am delighted that Michele has been awarded this post. She leads the BioMara project here at the institute, a six million Euro initiative investigating the use of micro- and macro-algae as sources of biofuels and has advised UK and international industry about opportunities to exploit algae as a renewable energy feedstock. The knowledge and experience she has gained in SAMS and her leadership skills will make her a great Director of AB-SIG.”
