Dr Michele Stanley, lead scientist of the BioMara project, was recently invited by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to join a knowledge exchange mission to China. The purpose of the visit was to build links between the UK and China, and saw Dr Stanley visiting Nanchang and Chongqing, where she spoke both with academics and industry.
Of particular interest was the potential for carbon dioxide, the powerful greenhouse gas, to be removed from the emissions produced by heavy industry and used to help cultivate microalgae. The cultivation of microalgae and its conversion to biofuel is one of the key areas of research for the BioMara project.
